Botswana

Home of the Smoke that Thunders

Thanks to a strange quirk of nature, this desert country explodes with life at its beating, green heart. The Okavango Delta is the jewel in Botswana’s crown – one of the last true African wildernesses.

The floodwaters of the Okavango bring life to Botswana, merging with the Linyanti, Selinda and Chobe rivers to turn the entire northern part of the country into a haven for wildlife. A safari here is alive with animal and bird life, all attracted by the precious water.

Further south, the desert survives unaffected, providing a harsh contrast to the lush north, especially the lunar salt pans of the Makgadkgadi.

Why Botswana

Botswana offers a kind of exclusivity almost unique to the country. Staying on a private concession in the Okavango Delta means access to an area of pristine wilderness – often thousands of hectares – is limited to just you and your fellow guests. This feeling of total seclusion is a true privilege, rarely found in travel.

When to Go

Between May and October, the skies are clear and the Okavango’s water levels are at their highest, making this the ideal time to visit Botswana. However, given the sheer volume of animal and bird life found here year-round, visiting in the quieter green season can still deliver a phenomenal experience.

Private concessions in the Okavango Delta

Three Places to Visit in Botswana

Okavango Delta

One of the continent’s most impressive natural phenomena, this wetland landscape is pristine wilderness. Private concessions offer total seclusion, surrounded by incredible wildlife.

Selinda Reserve

Fed by the Selinda Spillway that runs through its heart, this is an expanse of grasslands and riverine forest. Migrating and endemic animals pack this reserve year-round.

Makgadikgadi Pans

In total contrast to the delta, these lunar salt pans offer a completely different experience. Despite the arid environment, the pans are home to a surprising array of hardy animals.
