Zambia

xxx

Often referred to as the home of the walking safari, Zambia is one for safari purists. Few places offer an unadulterated, immersive wildlife experience quite like it.

South Luangwa National Park – littered with quiet valleys that beg to be explored on foot – attracts all the attention. And rightly so, given the phenomenal array of simple, characterful bush camps that exist here. But the Lower Zambezi’s floodplains offer a wonderfully contrasting perspective and the crashing majesty of Victoria Falls adds something totally different.

Why Zambia

It might be becoming a cliche, but it is certainly true that Zambia’s walking safaris are reason enough to visit. Thanks to guides who have spent a lifetime exploring on foot, you can track big game without a vehicle in a way that is rarely possible elsewhere.

When to Go

Zambia is best explored between June and November, when a long dry season descends on the country. The days can be hot, especially later in the season, but the dry conditions make for perfect wildlife spotting. If you’re looking to include Victoria Falls, it’s better to go right at the start of the dry season, when the Zambezi is still full of water and the falls are at their most powerful.
